Why usual methods of blocking spam calls don’t work

Blocking spam calls: why is it not working?Have you received any spam call recently? If yes, congratulations. You’ve just received your portion of the 3 billion spam calls made in USA each month. And there is a strong possibility that everything you do to block them just doesn’t work. And it probably won’t, either.

No, it’s not just you. Those pesky scammers and robocalls are really getting worse.

In this post, we cover:

Why are you receiving so many spam calls?

The statistics has shown that almost every 7th phone call made in USA is a spam, marketing or even a fraud call. It’s a bad news: since although there is the National Do Not Call Registry, the spammers are more and more insolent.

The result? Robocalls and spam calls in general are on the rise. According to the FTC report from 2017, it’s because of cheap access to internet calling services and autodialing. It’s also getting easier for spammers to hide their true identity and location thanks to so called spoofing.

At the same time, usual methods of blocking spam calls seem to stop keeping pace with scammers and robocallers. For three main reasons.

Why usual methods of spam blocking fail us

  1. It’s no longer possible to avoid spam using only your common sense

Either you’re not answering calls from unknown numbers at all (which is not very practical), or you answer only those calls that don’t look suspicious at the first sight. However, one thing is clear. No matter which way have you chosen, it’s not working.

It’s all because of spoofing, a tactic of changing the phone number you see on a display of your phone. Nowadays, it doesn’t matter what number do you see on display of your phone. Since scammers can hide their identity behind any number in the world.

  1. The Do Not Call Registry won’t protect you against scammers

Yes, there is the Do Not Call Registry. However, it won’t protect you against real spammers. For one reason: only legal telemarketing companies take the registry into consideration. Unlike scammers.

The result? The registry certainly will reduce the number of legal spam calls from reaching you, but it won’t affect illegal scam. At all.

  1. Your smartphone’s features won’t help you

Here’s what the FTC say about it:

Many mobile phones come equipped with features built into the device that can block calls from specific numbers. These features can let consumers block specific contacts, identify unwanted incoming calls for future blocking, and set “do not disturb” hours. You must manage these lists on your own, and the device may limit the number of calls you can block. ”

So where’s the problem? There are two, in fact. With features built into you mobile phone, you can block specific numbers. Which means that if certain number never called before, it can reach you without warning.

And there’s another thing. Thanks to phone spoofing, spammers can call you anyway, even when you block them. All they need to do is to change their number.
